From CRT to LCD: The Continuous Rise of Television
John Logie Baird’s place in television history is pretty much guaranteed, given he is credited as being the inventor of the first ever fully working television system. On top of this, he was also responsible for the first ever electronic colour television transmission way back in 1928.
It’s important to note that whilst the development of television was the result of the collective efforts of a number of inventors, Baird was a pioneer in his field and made major contributions that enabled the technology to advance far quicker than it otherwise would have.
Regardless of who did what to develop the early television sets, nobody at the time could’ve predicted how much of an impact TV would have, as it transported world events directly into people’s front rooms.
Today, the television is something most people take for granted. In fact, it is a technology that is so ubiquitous that it’s probably more meaningful to look at statistics relating to the number of TV sets per household, rather than the number of households that own one. It’s estimated that the average UK household has three television sets, which is an indication of the importance of television today.
From a technological point of view, the sleek, stylish sets with 30-inch plus screens that are commonplace today are a far cry from the bulky boxes of yesteryear.
The slim wall-mountable LCD tvs overtook the traditional Cathod Ray Tube (CRT) style televisions as the most common television technology in 2007 and with demand from emerging countries continuing to grow, it’s estimated that LCD TV sales will jump by up to fifty percent in 2010.
As with any technology, the main reason for the increase in sales is decreasing prices which, in this case, were a direct result of lower manufacturing costs.
Furthermore, although LCD televisions are coming down in price across the board, there are a number of dedicated websites that have special discount LCD TV deals that can bring the price down even more, covering all screen sizes from seven to forty two inches. Some LCD TVs come fully HD ready with Freeview installed too, so it pays to check the full specification before committing to buy.
Television technology has come on leaps and bounds since the early trailblazing days of John Logie Baird. The ubiquity of the television in modern day society is reflected in the fact that so many households have multiple TV sets, and with LCD TVs becoming increasingly affordable, it looks likely that television will continue to be a central part of homes everywhere.

I know that the first on is 5 inch bigger and is 1080p instead of 720p, but why does the 2nd one cost more? And what is contrast ratio? The first only has a contrast ratio of 1000:1, but he 2nd has 30,000:1! That looks like a pretty big difference!
just because a tv is labeled as 1080p does not make it automatically better. some of the best 720p sets walk all over 1080p ones.
and yes the sony is a better tv
