The best web site for reviews is cnet.com. Definitely start their. They don't cover every model out there, but they are about as good as it gets. Rival sites exist, but really don't have the respect that the cnet review team does.

Consumer Reports is also good. But of course they charge you money. So that's always a pain. But they do a respectable job for sure.

At the size you're looking at, please consider Plasma. You don't have to go there, but please at least consider it. It will deliver you a better image quality in tvs of that size.

LCDs, all types, suffer from motion blur issues (on fast motion). They compensate for this with 120Hz or 240Hz refresh rate features. This helps a lot for sure, but its not 100%. And it costs extra.

CCFL LCDs (most of them) have less vivid colors, sometimes grey-ish blacks, and so-so contrast. This is compensated for with the new LED LCD. The LED source helps improve this in a huge way. But it is the most premium feature you can buy for an LCD, so it costs a lot of money.

Plasma is near instantaneous in its refresh rate. It plays back motion flawlessly. And that's right out of the box, no extra features. Plasma delivers vivid colors, true blacks, and deep contrast. Again, inherent to the technology, nothing extra to pay for.

Don't get caught in all the myths around Plasma. The good brands (see below) don't suffer from burn-in. Plasmas do not have short life spans. Plasmas don't need to be recharged (I still don't know why some people think that one). And modern Plasmas can be energy star certified, so are not energy hogs.

If you do go LCD in the size you're looking at Samsung and Sony are your top choices. Both brands constantly fight each other to be top dog. They both have amazing image processors, strong reliability, and strong reputations. At 40"+ in Samsung I"d look at a Series 6 model (or higher). That will give you 1080p and 120Hz. In Sony I'd look at a V series or W series (again 1080p/120Hz) for those sizes. But Sharp, LG, and Toshiba are also worthy considerations. They all make some great sets in the size you're looking at. Just get appropriate specs from them (1080p and either 120Hz or 240Hz).

If you do go Plasma, look at Panasonic first and foremost. They are your outright go to option. They are the world leaders in the technology. I really can't see any reason to not go with them. They make great panels, they are reliable, they look great, and they even offer extra anti-image retention features above and beyond advances in the technology. If you really don't want to do Panasonic then look to either Samsung (yes they make Plasmas too) or LG.
