A term often heard now-a-days is DVD Replication. It is the manufacturing process that essentially replicates or carbon copies your original master. Both DVD replication and DVD duplication processes are quite similar to each other. In replication, a glass master is created which stamps data onto the DVDs while in duplication process, the data is burned on recordable DVDs surfaces. The difference among the two lies in their manufacturing procedures. Also the choice between the two is done on the basis of quantities of DVDs to be produced. It greater than 500 replicated DVDs are needed, the replication process is reasonable otherwise duplication process is employed.
The replicated CDs or DVDs have the same touch and finish as the original units. This ensures that you get the highest quality at the lowest of prices. The DVD is now replacing the CD just as the CD replaced cassette tapes and floppy disks. The reasons include the quality as well as the quantity of data to be copied. DVD replication technology allows more data and larger files to be stored. That’s why this is most commonly opted by people.
There are many techniques, devices and processes that are employed for carrying out the DVD replication process. The aim behind being so selective about the device and procedure used is to achieve the best quality DVDs but at reasonable rates. One of the many devices used is a DVD Burner.
A DVD burner can both play and create DVDs and CDs. Just like a CD or DVD player, in a burner, discs are loaded and unloaded via a sliding tray, and read using a laser. The laser shines on the reflective inner layer of a disc, detecting differences that are patterned to represent data. A burner’s laser, however, can also create or burn these data marks unlike a player. As DVDs are replacing CDs, in the same way DVD burners are being used as an alternative for CD burners. This is because all DVD burners can burn CDs, but CD burners cannot burn or even play DVD media of any kind. Also the reasonable prices of DVD burners have resulted in reducing the use of CD burners.
Many companies who want to carry out the bulk DVD replication for activities like producing DVD or CD business cards often use the DVD duplication systems. These systems have the capacity to produce many copies of DVD at a time. There are lots of such duplication systems available in the market. Their reasonable prices have made it very affordable to purchase them.
Sometimes the data to be copied is very large, so large that it cannot be accommodated in a single DVD. The space a normal DVD provides is usually 4.7 gigabytes ultimately limiting the standard DVD replication. This has aroused the need of dual layer DVD replication. In a dual layer DVD second physical layer is introduced within the disc itself, ultimately doubling the space a normal DVD provides i.e. to 8.5 gigabytes. Dual layer DVD replication is now nearly as cost-effective as traditional single layer technology. There are many dual layer burners which cost same as a single layer DVD burner. The dual layer DVDs although are expensive than the normal ones but employing this technology results in saving lots of space and time which results in neutralizing the cost of dual layer DVDs.
The fastest and the most cost effective way to carry out the disc duplication are using a DVD recorder. A DVD recorder refers to a standalone unit that resembles very closely to a VCR. It can record from any analog video source. There are many configurations available for DVD recorders such as Standalone, DVD Recorder/Hard Drive combo or DVD Recorder/VCR Combo. Normally a computer outfitted with a DVD recorder combined with off the shelf writing software is employed. But it should be known that the ability of the system to copy specific disc formats depends upon the individual capabilities of the software, reader and recorder used. Therefore the awareness of this information is very important to choose the right software.
Hence before choosing a DVD replication device, get yourself aware of all the devices available in the market, their features and your requirement.

Do you think that it is wise to buy a Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo player...?
or is it just a waste of money with Blu-Ray having won the format war? I see more and more combo players in stores and I don't know if they are marketing towards the people that had HD-DVD players and are trying to at least salvage their DVD collection, or if the DVD companies are still going to be stuborn and stick with the HD-DVD format. DO you think that all DVDs will go to Blu-Ray eventually or is the combo a better choice?
I wouldn't consider it. There are still only two companies making combination players: LG and Samsung, and the current models are probably their last (Samsung's first model is already out of production, the one in the stores now is the second generation). They're perfectly good Blu-Ray players, but tend to be much more expensive than Blu-Ray only players.
One argument you could make is that there are many HD-DVDs now being liquidated. If you buy 25 HD-DVDs for $7.00 each rather than 25 BDs for $20 each, that's a $325 savings... probably around the difference between the dual format and the Blu-Ray only players... maybe even a bit more. Of course, when that player wears out, you won't be able to play those HD-DVDs anymore... no one will be making a combination player in the future.
When Toshiba announced they were going to stop making HD-DVD players, there were only a few companies still making HD-DVDs: NBC/Universal, Paramount, and Dreamworks Animation. NBC/Universal has already announced they're going to enter the Blu-Ray market. Paramount hasn't that I know of, but they have stopped marketing HD-DVD, and presumably, will not release any new HD-DVD titles. At the loss-leader prices for the discs, it's unlikely anyone's even making new HD-DVD discs... I think they're just clearly out the distribution channel, and these may vanish althogether in a few months.
If the HD-DVD function were free, I'd say "go for it", or if you know of 25-or-so HD-DVD titles you really want and can find on sale. But beyond that, the future is clearly Blu-Ray.
