“guns” with cathodes that boil off electrons. The electrons are accelerated in an electric
field and are then deflected in a magnetic field before they arrive at a fluorescent screen
to produce a picture.

Consider an electron emitted from the cathode is accelerated through a voltage difference of 5000 volts (question above)

Dealing with kinetic energies for accelerated charges is rather simple. An electron volt (eV) is the amount of energy gained by a charge of 1 electron when it traverses a potential of 1 Volt.

Solving this for v gives,

v = sqrt( (E^2 - Eo^2) / E^2)*c

v = 0.1389 c = 4.16*10^7 m/s.

So the electron is actually traveling a tad slower in the exact relativistic handling than in the non-relativistic approximation.
