How do you use the USB recording via memory stick feature on televisions?
I'm thinking of buying the Technika 19" HD Ready LCD TV with USB Record built in DVD & Freeview from Tesco but i'm unsure of how the USB record feature works and i've seen one for the same price but which looks nicer without this feature and wonder whether it's worth it.
If anyone has one with it could you tell me a bit more about how to use it? I'd like to know what you can record, whether you can watch something and record something else at the same time, how compatible files are, whether it can be set up to record at a certain time etc.

All sets now have built in Freeview. Hardly any have built in Freeview HD so don't worry about that. The built in DVD will be a player only, no record facility.
If you have a tv programme, film or photographs that have been pre-recorded onto a USB stick then the tv will play that back for you just as if it was a DVD (photos will emerge as a slide show).
The USB record feature is very handy to save you missing bits of a programme if you are interrupted by phone calls or door callers. It is not a substitute for a proper DVD recorder if you want to record off-air programmes. You cannot use it in a pre-timed mode or to record another programme in the background.
You must plug a memory stick into the USB port. This must be formatted FAT32 and then the tv will download a small file onto it which provides 'housekeeping'. The tv will have somewhere in it's menu structure to do this.
The television will record the Current live television programme that you are watching onto the stick. If you decide to pause it (e.g. to answer the phone) then the screen will freeze but the tv will continue to record the programme. When you release the pause the tv will continue to show you the programme from the point where you paused it - it will replay the recorded material.
Two things to note:
1) The television will only be able to store and play the programme that you are currently watching. If you want to record another programme then you would need a second tuner and a big hard drive. In other words - a pvr machine.
2) The length of time that you can pause a live programme depends on the size of the memory stick that you're using. They typically hold about 25 minutes of standard definition programmes for each Gigabyte. So, if you have a 1GB stick the you can safely pause the programme and have a 25 minute phone call without losing anything. If your phone call lasts for 35 minutes then the television will start to overwrite the material that it has recoreded and you'll lose 10 minutes worth of programme.
Word of warning. Technicka is a "supermaket brand". The sets are low price because they are cheaply made. The screen and electronics behind it will not be anything like as good as one of the main brands. This could make you feel sad when you compare pictures with your friend's Sony or equivalent. More importantly, their reliability is much worse. A tv set should last for between 7 and 10 years, these things are definatley not as long lived as that.
Consider very carefully if you think that saving £100 or so is worth the hassle of having something that will inevitably disappoint in a year or so time.
Sharp make a 32" set with USB memory that sells for about £350. Smaller ones are probably a bit cheaper. You'll get a much better built set with a well established company behind it for not much more than the "Tesco set".
