Plasma vs LCD, 1080 vs 720?

I am looking into buying a new tv. I think a 40 or 42 inch would be plenty big. My question is how much difference can you tell between plasma and LCD tvs in that size range. Also how noticable is the difference between 1080 and 720p tvs along with the significance of the refresh rate of the screen, be it 60Hz or 120Hz or 600Hz. Any guidance would be great!

You won't find plasma tv's in sizes smaller then 42"...at least not with the good brands(Pioneer, Panasonic & Samsung)!

Plasma TV's have the highest native contrast ratios(40,000:1), giving them the blackest blacks and the most vivid and rich looking colors! They also have the fastest response times(.001ms) and fastest refresh rates(600hz), making them the best at fast motion content like sports, movies and gaming! As for the differences in 1080p and 720p...that only matters on the size of the screen and the seating distance from the TV! 1080p is the highest resolution, but if you sit too far away from it, it'll look the same as 720p! And if you sit too close to a 720p TV, the picture quality will start to get fuzzy and pixelated!

Here's an example for a 50" TV:
50" 1080p seating distance = 6ft to 8ft
50" 720p seating distance = 8ft to 13ft

As for the TV's (hz), the higher the number, the smoother film based movies will look! Film based movies are recorded at 24fps(frames per second) and cause motion artifacts known as 'juddering' on TV's with 60hz refresh rates! This is because 24 doesn't divide evenly into 60 and the TV must repeat frames to compensate...creating 'juddering' during fast motion! Getting a TV with 120hz, 240hz or 600hz eliminates the 'juddering' problem. Plasma's are best at this!
