Electroluminescence - Dispelling The Myth
What's New about that it's only EL?
Recently I posted a blog on the internet about our Light Tape® product and the reaction was amazing, plenty of hits, a healthy mix of comments posted ranging from the extremely excited to the calm knowledge seekers with the obligatory few that are ready to knock anything that even smells of advancement, basically the kind of mix of comments that's more than acceptable, extremely healthy and lets you know that all in all you're promoting a pretty dame good product. However, there was one posting in particular that made me stop and really think. The general gist of the comment was that this isn't new, it's only EL technology, it's been around for years; it's never been bright enough and doesn't last very long.
After mulling over the comment for a minute or two I found myself wondering where this guy had been for the past few years or what he'd seen. Yes, up until around 5 to 10 years ago without question the quality of EL products left much to be desired. In fact depending on where you get the product to this day it can live up to the negative comments but, lets not tar every EL manufacturer with the same 'poor quality' brush. I decided it might be a good idea to update the 'negative poster' on the more recent developments of the product that at sometime in his past had interested him briefly only to yield disappointing results and it would seem, had until now led him to totally disregard EL as a viable lighting source. You can only provide the facts and hope they connect with an open mind. The following, here expanded, is basically my answer to any doubting Thomas.
Just over 5 years ago the US company Sylvania developed a new generation phosphor for use in plasma televisions. This high quality, Natural Blue phosphor was brighter and had a hugely extended life span than any produced before and can be seen in application in millions of homes around the world. In 2008 a next 'new generation' phosphor was developed, this time using an Extreme Green phosphor. This next generation Extreme phosphor is even brighter and lasts even longer than the Natural Blue. At trade shows we demonstrate the product under standard lighting conditions unlike some of the competitive products that have to be viewed in a 'blacked out' booth. After replying to the doubter I sat and thought of all the people I'd met at various trade shows and meetings some of which had never seen the product before and who had been really blown away by the quality, brightness and variety of colours it comes in and even the people who had seen EL before, even on that day and were like our friend disappointed, until that is they saw Light Tape®. They couldn't believe the advances in the product and it was said time and again that this was one EL product that was now truly viable for a variety of uses. And, just incase you're wondering what those 'uses' could be here's a short list: Architecture, Bars, Restaurants, Theatres, Hotels, Cinemas, Point of Sale, Animation, Acrylic Etching, Exhibition and Events, Marine Lighting, Sports Halls and Arenas, Brand and Store Promotion, Aircraft Cockpits, Under the eaves of a house, under Kitchen cupboards and plinths, on Patios, Home Cinemas..... the list can go on and on. In conclusion then I have to say that yes, some EL products currently available for purchase are diabolical, but not all. It is always wise to keep an open mind where technology is concerned. Is the reception good on plasma, HDTV-ready tvs for regular channels that are not HDTV-ready.?
This may be a myth, but....I had a television salesperson tell me that even if I purchased the best widescreen plasma or LCD/HCD ready television, the reception would be fuzzy for "regular" television shows that are not HDTV, so I would be better off keeping my regular television until more HDTV programming was available. Because of that answer, I've been afraid of investing the money, thinking that my reception will be worse instead of spectacularly better. I mean, HDTV programming is available through my cable company, but the majority of programming is not. Any thoughts you can share from personal experience would be appreciated my friends.
Ah, yes my friend, I can answer your question. It took me 1 week after work to delve the reg tv to hdtv problem. The salesperson doesn't know how to adjust the various boxes in the change. When I got my 32" LCD HD ready tv and hooked it up to the cable box the pic looked like crap. solid colors in the back gfround where "boubling" and everything was washed out. Even the reg off the air tuner built in wasn't that good. The secret is to get an HD box from the cable company,, mine is a motorla comcast box, and set it as follows:
The set up from tha cable box for the best picture I've found is
TV type : 16:9
ypbpr output : 1080i
4:3 override : off
This is for a Motorla DTC6412 box,, others should be similar.
What this is doing is allways driving the TV with a 1080i signal,, allthe conversion is done in the cable box,, from 480i standard tv to 1080i for the best possible picture.
you can feed 1080i to a HDTV from several sources, hdmi or componant, I use the componant cable that comes with the cable box from comcast which is a 5 line cable: ypbpr.
componant video isn't the same as RCA, Componant is ypbpr with with a L & R sound output and deos carry 1080i
also, for viewing dvd movies:
Drive with an HDMI cable.
What you need to buy is an 'up converting dvd player' a samsung dvd-hd850 is a good example. it will convert the ntsc,, 480i to 1080i and send it up the hdmi port to the hdtv. Set the DVD player to output 1080i. The TV can display 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i,, set carefully and you should be impressed with the picture,, however,, the dvd's resolution is just 480i, unforunatly, even in wide screen. For a full HD picture the TV is capable of we must all go out and purchase the new hddvd or blueray players from sony and others. that will give you full hd picture,, but the cost is a little out of the ball opark right now,, about 500 for the hddvd brand and 1000 for the blueray,, same output but diff dvd formats. You also have to buy the dvd on hddvd or blueray format too,l won't work with the present dvd's, info just isn't there, wait awhile on these. C.
so to sum up,, hdtv cable box set to 1080i output pushing through a ypbr componant cable.
***!!! you adjust the cable box output with the cable box OFF and the TV on,, hit the red MENU button once. don't hold it down, just a light hit, or it will just flash on the screen. from this output setup screen you can adjust the cablr box output drive. set to
TV type : 16:9
ypbpr output : 1080i !!!!
4:3 override : off
. hit menu again to save.!!!***
and a "upconverting dvd" player driving through a HDMI cable and set to drive at 1080i.
that's it,, happy viewing. I suggest you print this,, as Q's are delted after 3 days i think.
