Sony Bravia Kdl-55X4500U LED Backlit LCD TV Review

The Sony Bravia KDL55X4500 is the most up to date model in Sony's LCD television product line, and their first to have LED backlight capability. Using LED, rather than fluorescent, lighting, is now among the most popular LCD television technologies as it leads to a display with richer colouring, while leading to a lower electricity bill. Although the Bravia KDL55X4500 is one of the more feature-rich LCD televisions currently available, it is also comparatively rather expensive. Could this high price tag possibly be justified?

Televisions manufactured by Sony have long been strong sellers on the basis of colour depth. The Bravia KDL55X4500 is a worthy addition to this longstanding theme in Sony's products, while also contributing something completely new: independently controlled brightness of the LEDs. With independent brightness, the LEDs that light the television adjust independently of one another, becoming brighter or less so depending on the demands of the source material. Sony's engineers have given the Bravia KDL55X4500 an incredible 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, which appears to be a legitimate claim. Dark portions of a scene display the richness that they should, while the light portions avoid the off colours that can often be noticed in LCD televisions.

The look of Sony's products contributes greatly to their strong reputation. Being so thin that other LCD tvs look fat by comparison, the Bravia KDL55X4500 is no exception. The vertically-oriented speakers are available in crimson, obsidian, and silver, and separated from the screen by transparent panes of glass.

Thanks to an entirely new technology, MotionFlow, the Bravia KDL55X4500 shows images with a striking 100 Hz smoothness. MotionFlow is an image processing technology that inserts new data between the images that would appear. The end result is an image that shows greater fluidity and depth of colour than would be available otherwise.

In all, the Bravia KDL55X4500 is extremely well equipped and features the wide array of connectivity options that would be expected of such an expensive television. Low resolution images can be scaled up to 1080p, and the television is equipped with tuners for all types of programming. It is suitable for use as a display for a home theatre PC, and can even stream content over a network using an onboard Ethernet connection.

In a market of high definition televisions in which every product can begin to look the same after a while, the Bravia KDL55X4500 shines as a product that is completely unique. The Bravia KDL55X4500 shines in spite of the price tag, thanks to a stellar feature set that contributes to one of the most beautiful pictures available in an LCD television today.
