Why does my TV keep cutting off then coming back on by itself?

I have a Sony flat screen television that cuts off for a split second every now and then. It will come right back on, it just cuts off long enough for the screen to go black and make the noise it usually makes when i turn it off and then it comes right back on. It has now started cutting off in the same manner but now it will cut off, come back on, and then almost immediately cut off again and the second time it cuts off the screen will not come back until I work it with the remote. I bought the tv back in late 2004 and it started happening abouot a year after i had it. Should have gotten the warranty! Any ideas what is going on?
